Remembering Whitney Houston in Eleven No.1 Songs


Here are some of the things that Whitney accomplished during her short life.



Houston’s debut album, “Whitney Houston,” was the first album by a female artist to sell more than 1,000,000 units in Canada. It was the best selling album by a female artist in the United States in the 1980s.

Four singles from Houston’s second album hit No. 1 on the Billboard 100. Houston was the first female artist to score for number 1 singles off of one album.

Houston and Madonna tied for most number one singles by a female artist in the 1980s.

During the week of December 27, 1992, Houston sold 632,000 copies of “I Will Always Love You.” It is the highest one-week sales record by a female artist.

“I Will Love You” is one of the best-selling singles of all time. It spent 14 weeks on the Billboard 100 and has sold more than 5 million copies around the world

“The Bodyguard Original Soundtrack” also set a record for single week sales. During Christmas week in 1992 the album sold more than a million copies. The album is currently the best-selling soundtrack of all time.

“The Preacher’s Wife Original Soundtrack” is the best-selling Gospel album of all time.

Houston has won 22 American Music Awards (a record for a female artist), as well as Grammy Awards, Emmy Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, MTV Movie Awards, People’s Choice Awards, World Music Awards and Billboard Music Awards.

Whitney Houston’s rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” during Super Bowl XXV is the only version that has been certified platinum.
